South Korea’s President Calls Malaysian, Indonesian Leaders
These interactions marked President Lee’s initial direct outreach to the heads of the two Southeast Asian nations since assuming office earlier this month.
According to South Korea’s presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, both Lee and Anwar voiced aspirations to deepen the strategic relationship between their respective countries.
They reached a consensus to enhance “mutually beneficial and substantive cooperation in a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, infrastructure, digital transformation, green growth, and defense,” especially in light of the anticipated finalization of the South Korea-Malaysia free trade agreement within the year.
This year also commemorates the 65th anniversary of diplomatic engagement between South Korea and Malaysia.
Additionally, South Korea and Malaysia are slated to host significant regional events — the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-related conferences, respectively — later in the year.
President Lee subsequently conversed with Prabowo, centering on advancing relations with Indonesia, which is Southeast Asia’s most populous and economically influential nation.
Describing the bond on social media platform X, Lee stated that Indonesia “is one of (South) Korea’s key partners.”
He emphasized that “The Special Strategic Partnership between our two countries has developed on the foundation of mutual trust and friendship.”
